My Birthday Realization.

“I love the big fresh starts, the clean slates like birthdays and new years, but I also really like the idea that we can get up every morning and start over.” Kristin Armstrong

My Birthday was on the 26th of December 2019, right after Christmas. Yup, my name would’ve been ‘Christiana’ but I decided to leave my mother’s belly by 1:00 am on the 26th of December instead. It’s actually amazing that I was born on boxing day, let me tell you why. One Standard tradition of most families in Nigeria is going ‘home’ to ‘celebrate’ Christmas, by home I mean our hometowns, where our fathers come from, our village. The idea is to spend Christmas with family and (nobody will accept this) show off your riches or children, Igbo men do this mostly.

So while others with birthdays at other times of the year celebrate their birthdays in schools and with friends, I’m always at home with family. The positive side of this is that I almost always get a cake, the negative side is that I never get to celebrate my birthday with friends unless I decide to do it before or after the actual date. I actually did this once and that was how I got these amazing pictures.

These are the beautiful children at an Orphanage home in Ahiaeke, Abia State that I decided to spend my birthday with and I absolutely loved the experience.
This is real, this is me, I’m exactly who I’m supposed to be. (I’m still a Disney fan, really)
The other beautiful ladies are my friends and acquaintances.

I attended my friends’ birthdays and I always enjoyed myself but months passed and when it was Christmas time we would all be in our different villages or just in different locations of the country and world. It was really annoying but I also appreciated the time I got to spend with my family. Anyway, this year I realized that I didn’t appreciate it enough.

I wanted something glamorous so I decided to hire a photographer and take my whole family (extended family included) out for dinner. I was uncertain about this because I needed to get a new phone, laptop and also renew my rent for the following year then I realized that the birthday would unnecessarily drain my pocket but I wanted to do it anyway because… birthday.

As God would have it, I became a little ill on my birthday morning and couldn’t put my plans in order, I also knew that no one would put things in order for me as well as I would for myself so I took it as a sign from God and decided to cut my losses, I nevertheless insisted that they get a cake for me which they did, my brothers also baked some pancakes and we brought different types of drinks and wines from the refrigerator. We had a lot of great food as a result of my sister’s wedding which had happened just a few days before that so there was a lot to eat and drink. My sister and her new husband were able to make it down for my birthday and we decided to play a game, I started surfing the web for a game that was appropriate for both kids and adults. After a few minutes, I discovered two games; Psych and Heads Up both by Ellen Degeneres and her creators. (God bless Google!)

We started with Heads Up because we didn’t all need to have it on our phones to play, we just needed one phone with the app and we were good to go. We got so caught up playing the game that we totally forgot that we were supposed to finish with it and move to Psych. We played the game till it was almost midnight, my sister dragged her husband inside and the music began to seem a little too loud because everywhere was quiet. We were already really tired so we told each other goodnight and went into our various rooms.

It turned out my birthday was much more fun than I could have possibly expected just because I spent it with family. A lot of people don’t ever get this and I get it every single year! It was an amazing realization! This was one of my best birthdays ever!
